Is Your Phone Compromised?

2

Your phone contains more personal information than any other device you own — banking apps, private messages, photos, location history, and passwords. If it is compromised, an attacker has access to your entire life. Here are 10 warning signs and what to do about them.

3

1. Unusual Battery Drain

4

Malware running in the background consumes power. If your battery suddenly drains much faster than usual without a change in your usage patterns, spyware could be transmitting data continuously.

5

2. Unexpected Data Usage Spikes

6

Check your mobile data usage in settings. Spyware uploads your photos, messages, and call recordings to remote servers. Unexplained data consumption — especially when you are not actively using your phone — is a red flag.

7

3. Phone Runs Hot When Idle

8

A phone that heats up while sitting unused suggests background processes are active. Cryptocurrency miners and surveillance software both cause this behavior.

9

4. Strange Apps You Did Not Install

10

Review your installed apps list regularly. Malware sometimes installs additional apps or hides behind generic names like "System Service" or "Phone Manager."

11

5. Unexpected Pop-ups or Ads

12

If you see pop-up ads outside of normal apps or your browser redirects to strange sites, adware is likely installed on your device.

13

6. Accounts Showing Unknown Activity

14

Check your email, social media, and banking apps for logins from unknown locations or devices. Use our Email Breach Checker to see if your credentials have been exposed in data breaches.

15

7. Calls or Texts You Did Not Send

16

Check your call history and sent messages. Some malware sends premium SMS messages or makes calls to generate revenue for attackers.

17

8. Camera or Microphone Activating Unexpectedly

18

Modern phones show indicators when camera or microphone are in use. If you see these activate without reason, spyware may be recording you.

19

9. Phone Takes Long to Shut Down

20

If your phone delays before powering off, it may be finishing data transmission to an attacker's server before completing shutdown.

21

10. Your IP Shows Unusual Location

22

Check your current IP address. If your IP shows a location that does not match where you are, or if a proxy detection test shows unexpected routing, your traffic may be intercepted.

23

What to Do If You Suspect Compromise

24

Change all passwords immediately from a different device. Enable two-factor authentication on all accounts. Run a full Privacy Checkup on your connection. Factory reset your phone as a last resort. Report any financial fraud to your bank immediately. Consider using a VPN to encrypt all future traffic.
