Microsoft Fixes Windows Server 2016 June 2026 Update Installation Failures

VulnerabilityIncident Response

Microsoft has resolved a known issue that caused the June 2026 security updates to fail on Windows Server 2016 systems that were not up to date. The bug primarily affected IT administrators attempting to deploy the KB5094122 cumulative update without first installing the prerequisite May 2026 KB5087537 security update, triggering 0x80070002 (ERROR_FILE_NOT_FOUND) errors during installation. The company confirmed the fix in an updated admin portal service alert, noting that affected devices should no longer experience installation failures when applying the latest patch.

The Windows Server 2016 fix is part of a wider series of update-related bugs Microsoft has been working to resolve in recent weeks. Last month, the company addressed similar failures on Windows 11 devices deploying KB5089549, which were traced to insufficient free space on the EFI System Partition (ESP) and caused updates to roll back automatically. Microsoft also patched a BitLocker recovery boot issue affecting Windows Server 2025 after the April 2026 cumulative update, and a separate bug causing installation failures via the Windows Update Standalone Installer (WUSA) for updates released since May 2025. Earlier in June, the company warned of 0x80073712 and 0x800f0993 errors on devices upgraded to Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2.

Administrators responsible for maintaining fleet integrity should verify prerequisite patches are installed before deploying KB5094122 and confirm their update channels are functioning correctly. IT teams can validate connectivity to Microsoft's update infrastructure by running a port scanner against Windows Update endpoints and confirm secure delivery with an SSL/TLS checker to ensure TLS handshakes to download.microsoft.com complete without certificate or protocol errors.

Separately, Microsoft confirmed on Wednesday that it is investigating a new issue in which third-party applications are failing to launch Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, and other Office applications after the June 2026 updates are installed. For security teams auditing endpoint exposure more broadly, a WHOIS lookup can help verify the legitimacy of any update-related domains reaching managed devices.
