MaxMind GeoIP / GeoLite2 Alternatives (2026)

The short answer: The closest drop-in replacement for MaxMind GeoLite2 is DB-IP Lite: same MMDB format, CC BY 4.0 license, and no signup to download. IPinfo Lite (unlimited free country and ASN data, CC BY-SA 4.0) and IPLocate's free country and ASN databases (CC BY-SA 4.0, updated daily) are the next best. If you would rather call an API than host a database, the HackMyIP API needs no key and no signup. Every license, limit, and price below was checked on the vendor's own site on September 29, 2026.

Why Developers Look for GeoLite2 Alternatives

GeoLite2 is still free and still good. The friction is in the terms and the plumbing, not the data:

  • Account and license key. You need a MaxMind account and a license key to download, and GeoLite users are limited to 30 database downloads per day. That is one more secret to manage in every CI pipeline and Docker build.

  • EULA obligations. The GeoLite EULA requires you to keep the data up to date and to delete old versions within 30 days of a new release.

                If you want to replace GeoLite2 without touching your lookup code, use DB-IP Lite: point your MMDB reader at the new file and add the DB-IP link. If you only need country and ASN and want daily updates, use IPinfo Lite or IPLocate's free database. If you need city, ZIP, or time zone in a free download and can live with an account, use IP2Location LITE. If you would rather not host a database at all, call the keyless HackMyIP API for low-volume lookups, or pay for a hosted API when you need an SLA.
