Agentic AI in Cybersecurity: Inside the MindStone Project and AI-Led Ransomware Response

AI SecurityAI ThreatsIncident Response

In a recent SecurityWeek podcast, Brian "SchleiF" Schleifer sat down with Clint Bodungen, Director of AI/ML Engineering at Arcovo and founder of ThreatGen, to unpack why traditional cybersecurity governance consistently fails practitioners and how the threat landscape has shifted over the past two decades. Bodungen, a leading voice in industrial control system (ICS) and OT security, argued that people remain the most exploited attack surface, far outpacing any technology gap. The wide-ranging discussion covered governance shortcomings, the rise of AI-driven threats, and the practical realities of defending critical infrastructure against increasingly autonomous adversaries.

The most newsworthy segment was Bodungen's first public deep dive into MindStone Agent, his open-source agentic AI project designed to give AI assistants persistent memory, identity continuity, and long-term context. Unlike stateless LLM interactions, MindStone aims to solve the continuity problem that limits today's chatbots from acting as true operational teammates. The conversation then moved to a real-world ransomware engagement where autonomous AI agents, with minimal human oversight, coordinated incident triage, forensic analysis, recovery operations, and full infrastructure migration. Bodungen framed the deployment as evidence that agentic architectures are already reshaping how security teams respond to high-pressure breaches, a shift practitioners can begin auditing themselves using tools like our port scanner and SSL/TLS checker to validate hardened post-incident environments.

Bodungen also stressed that defenders racing to adopt agentic AI must not overlook foundational hygiene. Identity persistence in AI systems echoes the same browser-level tracking and exposure risks that users face daily, something worth evaluating with a browser fingerprint test before integrating AI tools into sensitive workflows. As agentic platforms like MindStone mature, the line between human-led and machine-led incident response will continue to blur, forcing organizations to rethink governance, accountability, and trust frameworks long before the next ransomware wave arrives.
