Is Tor Browser Safe? What It Hides and What It Doesn't

~/sheets/is-tor-safe.md
1

Tor Is a Privacy Tool — Not a Magic Shield

2

Tor Browser routes your traffic through three random servers (nodes) worldwide, making it extremely difficult to trace your activity back to you. But "difficult" is not "impossible." Here is what you need to know.

3

What Tor Protects

4
    5
  • Your IP address — websites see the exit node's IP, not yours. Check your IP while using Tor to verify.
  • 6
  • Your browsing from your ISP — your ISP sees you connected to Tor, but cannot see what you are doing.
  • 7
  • Traffic analysis — multi-hop routing makes it very hard to correlate your traffic.
  • 8
  • Fingerprint standardization — Tor Browser makes all users look the same to reduce browser fingerprinting.
  • 9
    10

    What Tor Does NOT Protect

    11
      12
    • Logging into personal accounts — if you log into Gmail over Tor, Google knows who you are.
    • 13
    • Downloading files — downloaded files can phone home when opened outside Tor.
    • 14
    • Browser plugins — Flash, Java, etc. can bypass Tor and reveal your real IP.
    • 15
    • The exit node — the last node can see your unencrypted traffic (use HTTPS always).
    • 16
    • Advanced adversaries — nation-state actors with enough resources can potentially de-anonymize Tor users through traffic correlation.
    • 17
      18

      Is Tor Legal?

      19

Tor is legal in most countries including the US, UK, Canada, and most of Europe. It is used by journalists, activists, and privacy-conscious individuals. However, what you DO on Tor can be illegal — the tool itself is legal, the actions may not be. Some countries like China and Russia restrict Tor usage.

      20

      Tor vs VPN

      21

A VPN is faster but requires trusting the VPN provider. Tor is slower but trusts no single entity. For maximum privacy, some people use both: VPN first, then Tor. For everyday privacy, a good VPN is more practical. For serious anonymity needs, use Tor. Test your setup with our DNS leak test and WebRTC leak test.
